Classy furniture for the Russian Navy

Russia's defence minister Anatoly Serdyukov has decided on the future of ... the furniture for the military ships of the Russian Navy (recall that Mr. Serdyukov used to be a furniture salesman). From now on the naval ships will be outfitted with the furniture produced by Strongbox Marine, - a well-known British manufacturer.

FSB general has been fired

Quite out of the blue Russian President Dmitry Medvedev fired colonel-general Vyatcheslav Ushakov, now a former deputy of the director of FSB (the successor of the Soviet KGB). Mr. Ushakov has been with the service since 1975; between 2003 and now he has served at the deputy in charge of public relations. Officially, the general was fired for "unethical conduct", however the rumor has it that he was fired for doing his job, - in particular, - by making it a public knowledge that the Office of the Procecutor General of Moscow region was involved in protection of illegal gambling.

Russian strategic rocket forces got new commanders

It is definitely worth mentioning that during the last three years the Strategic Rocket Forces (Strategic Missile Troops) of the Russian Federation or RVSN RF (Russian: Ракетные войска стратегического назначения Российской Федерации (РВСН РФ) have been completely reformed, receiving in the process a new Commander-in-Chief (twice), all new deputies of the Commander-in-Chief, all new commanders of their armies and divisions. In June of last year, the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev appointed general-lieutenant Sergey Karakaev as the Commander-in-Chief of the Strategic Rocket Forces - to replace general-lieutenant Andrey Shvaichenko who resigned after having served less than a year in that position.

Russian generals choose Porsche Cayenne

The Ministry of Defence of Russia is about to announce the winner of a three-year contract that is to be awarded to a transportation company that will provide luxury cars with drivers for its high-ranking personell. For the next three years Russian generals will be driven in an assortment cars including Porsche Cayenne, Toyota Land Cruiser, Mercedes S series as well as BMW of 7th and 5th series. The total price tag will add up to around 10.3 billion of roubles. Russia's Defence Ministry is also going to lease 73 Ford Focus cars for less important cadres. On average the company that will be awarded the contract will be earning for the next three years about $200,000 a year from each car. Not a bad deal.

A new commander of the Belomor naval base

According to the official site of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, vice-admiral Nikolay Maksimov, the Commander-in-Chief of the North Fleet of the Russian Navy has introduced today a new commander of the Belomor naval base. The new commander is the captain of the first rank Victor Liin. Mr. Liin is a submariner with an impeccable record and many years of distinguished service on nuclear submarines.

General Alexander Burutin is fired

General-lieutenant Alexander Burutin, the first deputy of the Chief-of-Staff of the Russian Army just has been fired by the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, - along with a number of other generals and high ranking officials (including generals Anatoly Gulyaev and Evgeny Safonov, as well as colonels Nicolay Arkhipov and Serguey Vassilev - among others).

Inquiring minds are wondering: What is going on? In our humble opinion, - nothing special. Obviously Mr. Medvedev is getting ready for the next election of the Russian President to be held in 2012, by replacing "Putin's men" with his own.

General Vladimir Shamanov is recovering well

A good news: After two extensive surgeries general-lieutenant Vladimir Shamanov, the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Airborn Forces, is on the way to recovery, his life is not in danger any more.
